THE poor old Liberal Democrats are being ignored again. They too are immersed in a donorgate affair of their own and, unlike Peter Hain’s whistleblowing on himself in the hope of mitigating the stupidity of his “oversights”, no one is shouting about it. Familiarly, the Lib Dems donorgate affair involves a peerage. The party’s main corporate backer is a care home business that has handed over almost half its profits, a cool £400,000. Coincidentally, a businessman who sits on the board of all the sister companies of the donor firm Alpha Healthcare has been given a seat in the House of Lords on the recommendation of Lib Dem Treasurer Lord Clement-Jones. Lord Khalid Hameed says he knew nothing about the payments and has never given any money to any political party. By another coincidence, the largest single tranche of the payments – £125,000 – was delivered just after his seat in the Lords was confirmed.
