AFTER the disastrous negativity of Labour’s last campaign in Scotland and the knee-jerk opposition that has dominated the party’s agenda since it lost power, it would be nice to see some sensible criticism of the SNP government – in particular its tendency to direct new public spending to SNP voting, sorry, “economically deprived” areas. A charitable interpretation of a recent interview on BBC Radio Scotland by George Foulkes, Scottish Labour’s eminence grise, is that he did his best to do just that – it just didn’t quite come out quite right…
Lord Foulkes: “The SNP are on a very dangerous tack at the moment. What they are doing is trying to build up a situation in Scotland where the services are manifestly better than south of the Border in a number of areas.”
Interviewer: “Is that a bad thing?”
Lord Foulkes: “No. But they are doing it deliberately.”

He’s been misquoted. What he actually said was ‘they’re doing it deliberatly in order to stir up resentment of England’.
The false promises and gloss of the SNP are starting to lose their shine. I suggest you move to serious debate before the public do, because then it will be too late…
