Every now and again, one of them breaks out of the cage and shows what true Tory colours look like. Latest in the line of gibbering Tory councillors is John Ward of Medway council in Kent, who is on the brink of resignation after demanding that parents on benefits should be sterilised to stop them having more than one child. He made the remark during a discussion about the hunt for missing schoolgirl Shannon Matthews, discovered under a bed with her abductor after 23 days. Citing her family as an example of social decline in Britain, Mr Ward wrote on his website: “There is an increasingly strong case for compulsory sterilisation of all those who have had a second child – or third, or whatever – while living off state benefits. It would clearly take a lot of social pressures off all concerned, thus protecting the youngsters themselves to some degree, and remove the incentive to breed for greed, ie for more public subsidy.” Jawohl, mein Führer!
