Just few weeks ago, John Street highlighted the appointment of Sir Stuart Bell to the Speaker’s committee reporting on MPs’ expenses, commenting that the Labour MP for Middlesbrough was an excellent choice as he employed his wife, Lady Margaret, on £35,000 per year as his “office manager” and had also employed his 19 year-old son as a researcher, until young Malcolm was arrested and jailed for stealing cheques from MPs in the House of Commons. It was noted that Sir Stuart neither has a constituency office nor an advertised phone number in Middlesbrough. Now, for the first-time in memory, bemused constituents have received a full colour 4-page glossy “Parliamentary Newsletter”, featuring 6 photographs of Sir Stuart, with a phone number and email address. The newsletter states it has been “funded through the House of Commons Communications Allowance”. This is most fortunate, as full details of MPs’ expenses claims are just about to be published.
