Anger has erupted, as they say in the Daily Mirror, after it was revealed that taxpayers are shelling out £118 million a year to send 8,500 to send children of military officers and diplomats to top toff public schools. The cash is paid out to public servants whose jobs involve travel abroad with some receiving 90 per cent of fees for schools such as Eton. The excuse is that the kids can receive an education which is not disrupted by frequent trips abroad. The scam even has the Conservative front campaign the TaxPayers’ Alliance in volcanic mode, with spokesman Mark Wallace pointing out that cheaper, state-run schools are available. “It’s fine to give someone 90 per cent of a company car – but don’t say we’ll give you 90 per cent of a Lamborghini”, he said. That’s class.
