WHAT on earth has possessed the Welsh Assembly, supposedly run by Labour in cahoots with Plaid Cymru? Perhaps in the name of modern art or as a bizarre attempt to boost Cardiff Bay’s brittle image, a 10-foot tall tin-plate panel portrait of Margaret Thatcher is now on public display. Admittedly, the Iron Lady was one of his first visitors after Gordon Brown moved into Number 10 Downing Street but she is remembered in Wales only for the havoc she wrought when miners and their communities were put to the sword. Assembly publicity persons insist the installation of the old bat’s likeness didn’t cost the public purse a penny – which is still more than it’s worth. What it is costing is further erosion of Labour’s already flagging support among those it once represented.
