A glaring example of the difference of approach between the BBC and ITV this week as the head-to-head rival 10 o’clock news bulletins strove to reflect the importance of what was in the news on Monday. The Beeb led the bulletin with a special report on hunger in Ethiopia, with extensive coverage on the ground and analysis of the global food crisis. Over on the other side, Sir Trevor McDonald and his team ignored famine and soaring food costs in favour of extensive coverage of the dead dolphins of Cornwall, which might not have looked so inappropriate if it had not been followed by further extensive coverage of the mental anguish suffered by panda bears in China’s earthquakes in which, lest we forget, tens of thousands died while millions remain homeless. Aw, but did they look cute!?
