Great article, if there were more like Robert Taylor in the Labour Party then some of us might still be members,mind you I was expelled for saying much the same in 1998 perhaps I was ahead of my time!
Robert is particularly accurate about Scotland, Labour will be in opposition for a generation and Scotland will, faced with Tory rule from London vote for independence.Without 43 Labour MPs from Scotland Labour will be in permanent opposition in England still they deserve no better.

Nikostratos: You seem to have a very poor grasp of what is happening in Scottish Politics and the Social Democtatic platform not only espoused but actually being delivered by the SNP. I note that you do accept that the main aim of the SNP is to win Independence and that will happen soon.

¨What few political commentators outside Scotland have recognised is that it is now the Scottish National Party under Alex Salmond and not Labour which is the credible political force on the progressive centre-left.

Excellent article written factually rather than as Labour Party hand out.

Robert Taylor says “Labour opposes all these admirable social policies for England”.

The reason for which surely is we can’t afford these ‘admirable’ but costly social policies AND the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan not to mention the upgrading of Trident.

On the other hand, aren’t we all delighted to make sacrifices to keep Britain as a major military power in the world?…..er no.

I’d rather have good schools, good hospitals, good transport system, be able to afford to drive my car, heat my house and eat occassionally thank you very much.

The snp are a coalition and not a political party. my belief is the eventual path the snp will choose(if they ever gain true political dominance)
will be more in tune with a Thatcheright vision of society. Of course Alex will be gone having served his purpose.Such is loyalty in politics.

Is anybody in the present Government actually listening to such arguments.
seems to me that they give a deaf ear to ordinary people(voters)and fall over themselves to please the rich and powerful.Unfortubnately that game is up
and they have returned to the tory fold Blairism helped them rule the last decade but they now want to return ‘home’ to the conservatives.

political oblivion looks to be labours lot. But from the ashes may rise a phoenix of social democracy.

An excellent and trenchant article.I often get the impression these days that the Labour Party has a death wish. The MPs, mind you, won’t care as long as they can retire on fat pensions that the manual working class can only fantasise about.
