LORD Mandelson may be interesting, in a way that a nasty rash can be interesting, but he doesn’t have many interests. At least not those he cares to record in the register of member’s interests. His declaration, published online this week, omits any mention of “Oli” (garch) Deripaska whose luxurious hospitality he has enjoyed. Nor does it make any mention of who paid the bill for his £5,500-a-night hotel in Moscow when accompanying a trade delegation last month. Us, presumably. He did, however, declare his ministerial salary and the £78,000-a-year “transitional allowance” he receives from the European Union following his decision to quit as a trade commissioner. That’s a little under four times the national average wage, for doing nothing.
