FINANCE workers protested about the greed of their banking bosses outside the House of Commons Treasury Select Committee hearing on Tuesday.

Unite members from across the financial services sector demonstrated outside Portcullis House where the chief executives of some of Britain’s biggest finance companies – including Andy Hornby of HBOS and Sir Fred Goodwin of RBS, the man who’s been dubbed “the world’s worst banker” – were being grilled by MPs.

They wanted to remind their bosses – many of whom have walked off with huge bonuses for their part in bringing about the banking collapse – what they’ve done. Placards and tee shirts read: “Remember us? You’ve put our jobs at risk!” Workers are angry that while executives award themselves bumper pay rises, some employees earn as little as £12,000 and are struggling to provide for their families.

Unite joint general secretary Derek Simpson said: “These bankers – the masters of disaster – have brought the UK’s financial services industry to its knees without any acknowledgement of the misery they have caused hard-working staff in the sector. Unite members will no longer stand by as the staggering greed and excesses of those at the top of this industry compromises the position of dedicated finance workers, who deserve fair pay.”
