TRADE UNIONS staged a series of marches on Tuesday to mark Workers’ Memorial Day. The RMT handed out leaflets to passengers to highlight concerns over the safety and security of rail workers and UCATT held a two minute silence in memory of all those who have died at work.

John McDonnell, MP for Hayes & Harlington, said: “Workers’ Memorial Day is important because it honours ordinary people who have died or been injured as a result of carrying out their day to day employment – invariably as a result of failings by employers to ensure adequate health and safety measures.”

Unison general secretary Dave Prentis said: “The purpose is to remember those who have died, been injured or been made ill by their work. It is also about ensuring that this suffering is used to highlight the importance of health and safety for those still at work and their families.”
