Unite convenor Rob Williams, whose sacking from a car parts factory nearly unleashed a strike, has hailed the “fantastic” support he received after his employers backed down last week.

Linamar Automotive agreed to reinstate Mr Williams less than 24 hours before an unlimited strike at their Swansea plant was due to begin, following interventions from joint general secretary Tony Woodley. “The members and the shop stewards played a fantastic role”, Mr Williams told Tribune.

Linamar and Unite will now resume negotiations over pay and conditions “very soon”, he added. Unite says the firm has broken a promise to maintain a final salary pension scheme.
