Unions will consult their members on a pay offer for 1.6 million council workers, it was announced this week. Local government bosses last week tabled a pay rise of one per cent, with 1.25 per cent for the lowest paid.

Unison, Unite and the GMB, who rejected the previous offer of 0.5 per cent, said they would recommend the offer as “the best available through negotiation”. GMB local government head Brian Strutton said that they would seek a better pay rise next year.

The Local Government Association has warned it will withdraw the offer and end negotiations if it is rejected.
