He’s not going where the sun shines brightly and he’s not going where the sea is blue. And, unlike his predecessor, he’s not going on a sleazy freebie courtesy of Silvio Berlusconi. There are reports that Gordon Brown’s summer holiday will include voluntary work in his constituency. Just so long as he isn’t doing anyone out of paid employment and it doesn’t clash with bob-a-job week so he does a boy scout out of 5p. And how many of his ministers are in trepidation that they will be expected to follow his example? According to the Government’s website, voluntary work is a way “to develop new skills, gain experience, get training in new areas of work, increase your contacts, which could provide job leads, build your confidence and have fun”. Are these things likely to stand the Prime Minister in good stead within the next year or so? He doesn’t really do fun.
