Well said Joe Patterson, and well put.

these empty vessels expect us to believe them...

just look at Milly's claim that they are shifting from 'targets and standards to rights and entitlements', when we have all suffered under these insufferably arrogant professional con-men, the COMPLETE REVERSE over the last thirteen years - are you NUTS???? what have we been paying you billions to do???? 'Oh, after a decade of sterile and cynical government we have now reversed all our thinking'...HOW CAN WE TAKE YOU SERIOUSLY?

BTW, is this another revised New Labour measure for a time period? (see wikipedia, 'the generation length is 27.4 years in the United Kingdom as of 2004.)how do you trust such nonsense?

if the labour manifesto is not truly'revolutionary', forget it.

"The traditional political structures of mainstream political parties are dying and our biggest concern is the gap between our membership and our potential voter base."

They are not dying they are long dead and both TweedleDum and Tweedle Dee will do anything but recognise this. They will constantly pretend to be extending democracy by this or that tinkering at the edges of what has long ceased to be a democracy (if indeed it ever was one). What possble fundamental difference can it make to our represention if we have primaries but retain an electoral system where around 70% of all votes cast are just wasted. Or where we always land up with a minority elective dictatorship with a phoney unrepresentative overall parliamentary majority but the support of less than a third of the electoraate (we should in this connexion never cease to ram home the fact that at present we have a government - a minority elective dictatorship - with the support of a mere 21% of the electorate).

And in 2010 we shall get a minority elective dictatorship of the other half of the the cosy duopoly that has evovled under first-past-the-post, and this will come out with its own brand of rubbish about extending democracy but at the same time refusing to do anything about the fundamental reason why we have not got a democracy in the first place.

This deadlock will not be overcome until the population as a whole rises up and demands a system which gives us MP’s and a majority supported government who actuallly represent what we have voted for. Sadly I do not see any sign of such a revolt. There is too much electoral ignorance and apathy.

Incidentally STV in multi-member constituencies would not only be porportional but it would solve automatically the problem of getting the right candidates elected.
