Will we ever know what Gordon Brown really thinks about the release of Abdelbaset al-Megrahi? So far, we have had at least three definitive and contradictory statements. First Number 10: “ We respect the process and the decision itself.” Then a leak of then Defence minister Bill Rammell to Tripoli, echoed by Foreign Secretary David Miliband last week: “…neither the Prime Minister or the Foreign Secretary [then Jack Straw] want to see him die in prison.” Now this week, the PM’s closest ally, Ed Balls: “None of us wanted to see Megrahi released.” Amid the confusion and obfuscation, Mr Straw flatly contradicted Mr Brown last weekend to admit that it was, after all, all about oil.
