Big brothers were in playful mood at a TUC fringe on inter-union raiding in the US. As RMT leader Bob Crow left the platform to attend another event, fellow speaker GMB leader Paul Kenny informed the audience: “We can get another three up here now he’s gone.” Mr Crow turned to reply with a weary: “I knew him when he had nothing…” In his own speech the train workers’ leader, who was in popular demand on the fringe, managed – many would say understandably – to mix up Tony Blair and Gordon Brown and to get a little dig in at his friends Tony Woodley and Derek Simpson, observing that “coming up with names like Unite doesn’t mean it brings unity”.
