Battered and bruised MPs are in for another drubbing when they get back from the absurdly long summer recess. Commons authorities have discovered a £50 million shortfall in the parliamentary pension scheme and although MPs have already agreed to stump up an extra £62 a month to help fill it that has been deemed insufficient. Now drastic action is being considered. Having voted to increase the retirement age for everybody else to 68 while allowing themselves to draw their own pensions at 65, the MPs face having to wait the extra three years before getting their “gold-plated” rewards for services rendered.
