The Communication Workers’ Union provoked a rare confrontation on the Congress floor between major unions this year, when Unite and Unison refused to support its motion calling on Labour-affiliated unions to bypass the Labour-union link.
As Tribune went to press, the CWU’s motion – which condemned the Government for its “policy of continuing privatisation, cuts in spending and failure to remove the anti-trade union laws” – was set to fall in the face of criticism that it was too anti-Labour.
A CWU delegate told Tribune it merely reflected Labour’s excessive central control over the party’s institutions, including the selection of parliamentary candidates
