Labour conference has long been less of a political party event and more just an endless stream of corporate parties. No wonder cash-strapped consituency parties don’t bother sending delegates to a politically meaningless mediafest. MPs just groan at the prospect of being there, so largely they aren’t. This year it is estimated that as few as 150 delegates are in attendance,  from around a possible 650 constituencies.

It’s an example of how the party has been hollowed out by the successive leaders. And anyway, who would want to be fleeced by the conference hotel The Grand which is charging more than £3 a cuppa and £10 for a glass of piss poor pinot grigio?

It is far too expensive to go to conference.

Tip: Avoid the hotels/bars/cafes inside the ring of steel. I recommend most of the pubs and cafes in the North Laines. A favourite is the Basketmakers Arms, 12 Gloucester Rd. Alternatively; go to the offie, buy a good bottle of wine and put it in your hotel room fridge or drink it on the beach.
