Tory conference managers were playing with fire and direct action protestors may have missed a trick in Manchester recently. The Conservative conference was treated to a “live” backdrop of an unidentified town with scenes life just going on as normal – shoppers, buses, people and all that. The only thing missing – apparently a concern of the Tory high command – was a live, full-scale protest at Tory policies, or even a full-blown riot. That would have livened up the tedium. Unfortunately, even if they thought of it, it appears no protest group identified the location.
