Tories join the 21st century – well, maybe the 20th. Elizabeth Truss is still their parliamentary candidate for South West Norfolk after members of the local Conservative association voted by 132 votes to 37 not to get rid of her. Her “sin” was not telling the association about her affair with Conservative MP Mark Field a few years ago, even though this was quite widely publicised at the time. Perhaps they have been reading the wrong newspapers, although the Daily Telegraph can be enthusiastic when it comes to reporting such matters. Not all Ms Truss’ opponents – some of whom have been dubbed the “Turnip Taliban” by people on their own side – have been pacified. One senior local Tory, Sir Jeremy Bagge, said: “I am not proud to be a Conservative, because Central Office has deceived and betrayed us.” Sir Jeremy was vehement in his denials that he is anti-women. “Who cooks my lunch? Who cooks my dinner? How did my three wonderful children appear?” And these people want to run the country.
