The TUC has called on the Low Pay Commission to recommend that the Government raise the national minimum wage for adults by 20p from £5.80 to £6 an hour from October next year.

TUC general secretary Brendan Barber said: “It is predictable that some employer groups are saying any increase will threaten jobs and that £6 is too much.

“But raising the minimum wage has already helped thousands of families without causing significant job losses.

“The effect of a further reasonable increase on employer pay bills will be modest, and companies should find them easy to absorb. An increase is required to ensure that working families are not left in unnecessary poverty.”
