Steel workers on Teesside could strike if Tata Corus, the company which intends to mothball the Redcar plant at the end of this month, with the loss of 1,700 jobs, does not talk openly about alternatives.
Michael Leahy, the union’s general secretary, said: “Tata Corus has got to be clear about their intentions – and should act in the best interests of their workforce. Community will fight for a future for steelmaking on Teesside because closure would be industrial sabotage and environmental vandalism.
“It seems Tata Corus do not want to find a solution and one short term decision should not decide the future of a whole community. This is an industrial problem, and if Tata Corus don’t start talking honestly about alternatives we might seek an industrial solution.”
