War on Want has welcomed the Government’s announcement that ministers now accept the need for an ombudsman to police supermarkets’ behaviour towards their suppliers.

The anti-poverty charity hailed the statement after four years campaigning but is pressing Business Secretary Lord Mandelson for a quick appointment and calling for tough penalties to stop the abuse of the big high street chains.

Simon McRae, senior campaigns officer, said: “At last the Government has acknowledged the need for a supermarket ombudsman amid many suppliers’ complaints of abuse. But Mandelson must now minimise its delay and ensure the watchdog is independent, robust and has the authority to prevent stores exploiting overseas workers.”
