Has Labour found a new electioneering technique? Gordon Brown tearful with Piers Morgan, Alastair Campbell blubbing to Andrew Marr: is it a pitch for the sympathy vote? Perhaps Labour canvassers should be issued with onions when they hit the campaign trail to ensure free-flowing waterworks  and see if there are any “pity points” to be won. However, since the information commissioner has now ordered the party to stop making nuisance phone calls – automated pleas for support constitute direct marketing if the person receiving them has not given their consent – onions may be unnecessary. The  calls in questions were recorded by former Coronation Street Star Liz Dawn  and, yes, that is as pathetic as its sounds.
