They said it would happen and now it has. So certain were Germany and finance experts in other eurozone countries that Greece did not come anywhere near matching the economic benchmarks required for entry into the currency that they created an institutional block ruling out any mechanism for bailing out a failing economy. And there were certainties that Greece would one day fail. That day has come, with unfortunate timing for the socialist government elected only a few weeks ago. But, as Terry Moore reports on page 21, the methodologies employed by successive generations of Greek statisticians, deceitfully deployed by politicians and under-scrutinised by international economic monitors, meant that the farce of running an economy outside the disciplines of the currency to which it is wedded was sooner or later going to turn to tragedy.
