Challengers to Unison general secretary Dave Prentis were promising to change the union’s Labour link as nominations for the union’s general secretary election opened this week.
Paul Holmes, a member of Unison’s national executive committee and a Labour Party member, has promised to allow an annual ballot on affiliation if elected in the May poll. He is the favourite to be nominated by Unison’s United Left faction. Roger Bannister, an NEC and Socialist Party member, is campaigning on a platform of disaffiliating from the party.
In a statement on his new campaign website Mr Prentis promised to ensure the union “continues to build on real year-on-year membership growth” and remains “democratic and member-led”.
