The fate of East Lothian Labour MP Anne Moffat is to be decided by a postal ballot of the party’s ruling National Executive Committee.
The decision was made at a special meeting of the NEC on March 3 following a long and acrimonious tussle with local party members and an official declaration that “new information” had come to light.
In an unusual move, which delays a decision by a week to March 10, members not present will be able to cast their ballot by telephone.
It follows a meeting of the constituency party in January which voted by 25 votes to five to refer Ms Moffat’s candidacy to the NEC.
Meanwhile, Joan Humble is the latest Labour MP to announce that she is to step down at the general election. Her Blackpool North and Fleetwood seat has a 5,062 majority. The total number of Labour MPs retiring is now just under 90. Tommy McAvoy is the latest Scottish MP to announce he will stand down, leaving a 16,112 majority in his Rutherglen and Hamilton West constituency.
Former MP John Cryer has been selected for Leyton and Wanstead in east London and former ministerial special adviser Ian Lavery has been chosen for Wansbeck.
