Steel giant Corus has agreed a £1.5 million package to help workers on Teesside after a marathon meeting between Community general secretary Michael Leahy and the company’s chief executive Kirby Adams. The deal will fund a training scheme for those at risk of redundancy, enrolling up to 300 steelworkers for three to four months. Mr Leahy welcomed the move but said: “The real challenge is to find a buyer as soon as possible to secure the long-term future of Teesside.”

Tom Blenkinsop, Labour candidate for Middlesbrough South and East Cleveland, said: “Corus’ £1.5 million skills retention plan, while they pursue a long-term partner, is welcome” and added that it was “a testament to Leahy’s leadership and razor sharp focus on saving steel-making on Teesside”.
