The people’s pullover

By Tom Miller /Wednesday, May 26th, 2010

Something has changed on the Labour Party’s leadership website, and we can’t say for certain that all is well.

Yes folks, candidate John McDonnell’s scarlet red v-neck jumper has made a surreptitious appearance, after he was pictured on the same site yesterday wearing a suit and tie. Nobody else seems to have changed their picture.

Perhaps this is symbolic of Mr McDonnell’s desire to see the party make a shift left from the politics of New Labour. While I would like to cautiously welcome this iconoclastic move, I think it is worth taking stock. Firstly, the suit look wasn’t bad at all. It was a good photo! Secondly, this kind of thing has all been tried before, and without the effect that McDonnell presumably desires.

How the nominations stack up

By Oli Usher /Tuesday, May 25th, 2010

There are various unofficial counts of how many nominations the candidates for Labour leadership have. The Labour Party website is updating its list twice a day (at 12.30 and 17.30) with those who have formally nominated one of the candidates, rather than those who have merely expressed support.

So far, the tally is:

Ed Miliband: 39

David Miliband: 36

Ed Balls: 7

Andy Burnham: 3

Diane Abbott: 0

John McDonnell: 0

Only Ed Miliband has nominated himself so far.
