Labour MP Natascha Engel has this week been elected to chair the House of Commons’ new backbench business committee. MPs decided only last week to set up the committee, which will take the power to timetable backbench MPs’ legislative plans away from government.

Some MPs were concerned at her election, as last year she voted against setting up the body when on the reform committee that drew up the plan. Last week Ms Engels expressed support for the committee in principle. The committee was part of a package of proposals put forward by MPs before the election in order to democratise the running of Parliament, and will have control over 27 days of parliamentary business.
