Support is being canvassed for the reinstatement of the symbolic Clause IV in Labour’s constitution. Party members are being asked to support the move from the Campaign for Labour Party Democracy at this year’s annual conference.

The new wording commits the party to democracy, human rights and the promotion of human welfare, sustained employment and equal rights for all.

It also recognises the “important role of trade unions in protecting and advancing the interests of working people” and the need to protect rights such as collective bargaining and workers’ participation in employment decisions.

About time too. It disgusted me when Blair erased this important part of the Labour doctrine. I turned away from the Labour party, when Blair took clause 4 away and voted Socialist alternative, I was furious with him and couldn’t believe what he was doing to the party I loved. I voted Labour at the last election in a desperate attempt to keep the Tories out. I am now a member of the party, as I like some of the front benchers. If the party can re-introduce clause 4, it would be a massive step away from the Thatcherite, Blairite policies the party had. I particularly like the bit about trade unions, at last the party is starting to sound more Socialist than the neo- Conservative pro big business claptrap I have been hearing. Well done Campaign for Labour Party Democracy keep up the good work you have a supporter here in me.

One has to wonder when the authors of this campaign actually last visited a factory.  If they ever do take time out to visit, the first thing that will strike them if they look really, really carefully is the complete absence of the aforesaid ”workers” everybody having automated years ago.  What’s it like on planet Zog?

The new wording covers about everything, so the special bit about ‘the Unions’ is no longer necessary. The Labour Party has to be a universal Party not a sectional Party.
