Government attacks on jobs, pay and union rights make up “a depressing story” which it will be hard to fight, Unison deputy general secretary Keith Sonnet has warned.

In a report seen by Tribune, Mr Sonnet told union officials that national pay bargaining was certain to “decline” in the public sector. He added: “The freezing of pay and attacks on pensions will be unacceptable and force unions into industrial action that will be difficult to sustain. Locally deals will be sought to trade pay against jobs, but nationally it is not possible to implement such deals with meaning. These actions will undermine the bargaining machinery”.

A spokesperson said Unison would join community groups and other unions to form an alliance against cuts.
