Disgraced former Chief Secretary to the Treasury David Laws is being groomed for a return to office, according to pundits, reporters and political bloggers.
Tory website ConservativeHome was the first to put out the welcome mat for the Orange Book Liberal Democrat and Yeovil MP, after The Spectator’s political editor James Forsyth reported that Mr Laws had been at a number of key Downing Street meetings.
Diverse outlets – ranging from political blogger Guido Fawkes to Pink News – seized on the signals that the political waters are being tested for his return.
Parliamentary standards commissioner John Lyon’s report on the propriety, or otherwise, of the £40,000 of controversial rental expense claims made by Mr Laws – which led to his resignation – is still awaited.
Until his resignation in May, Mr Laws had been his party’s most enthusiastic cuts advocate. His return in time for the October Spending Review would be especially welcomed by Conservatives.
