Labour should launch an investigation into the effects of privatisation on public services, according to a motion backed overwhelmingly by conference.

The motion, co-brought by the union Unison, seeks to establish Labour as the party of investment instead of cuts, calling on future governments to “support recovery through protecting investment in public services to protect the most vulnerable through progressive taxation, including measures to tackle avoidance”.

Unison general secretary Dave Prentis said: “Why was it so hard to get a Labour Government to understand that our concerns about privatisation weren’t about dogma? Our members know it means a bad deal for the public”.

Unison officials told Tribune they were hopeful that Ed Miliband, whom the union supported for the leadership, would back a proper investigation of privatisation.
