Social housing schemes across the country could be restored after the Government’s abolition of regional housing targets, throwing out plans for over 180,000 homes, was rejected by the High Court last week.

The court ruled that Communities Secretary Eric Pickles was wrong to scrap the target without carrying out environmental impact assessments.

However, the Government’s forthcoming Localism Bill will formally scrap the targets. Councils will now have to consider whether to recognise the targets in their housing plans.

National Housing Federation chief executive David Orr said: “We hope the Government will now put in place the necessary arrangements to ensure the homes this country desperately needs are delivered.”
