The Prime Minister’s official spokesman, asked if David Cameron thought the Governor of the Bank of England was doing a good job, has said: “Yeah”.

The question came up after it was revealed on WikiLeaks that Mervyn King had privately criticised Mr Cameron and George Osborne to United States ambassador Louis Susman in February this year.

Mr King was worried about their lack of experience, the lack of depth in their inner circle, and their tendency to see things only in terms of their electoral impact, according to leaked American embassy diplomatic cables released by the website in the last week.
