The veteran Tory council leader who taunted that northerners who lose their jobs should replace Eastern Europeans as fruit pickers will not face discipline by his party.

David Shakespeare, leader of Buckingham County Council and also of the Conservative Group on the Local Government Association was not representing Conservative views, according to a party spokesman. Barnsley East Labour MP Michael Dugher had earlier written to Mr Cameron asking him to disown the comments.
