Speaking at the relaunch of Labour’s Third Place First initiative, an ambitious plan to try and push for electoral success in constituencies which have previously been no-go areas for the party, particularly in the south, Mr Burnham said: “If you are not just asking for something from the community but doing something for the community, then it legitimises Labour within the community. New Labour articulated the aspirations of ordinary people, with or without alarm clocks.”

Organiser Keith Dibble said the collapse of Liberal Democrat support in the opinion polls should make it possible for Labour to become competitive throughout the country.
