Cameron moves to quash backbench revolt

David Cameron is fighting a battle to quash a mounting insurgency by Tory MPs over Europe and relations with their Liberal Democrat coalition partners.

As Tory whips fought to contain the threat of the most serious House of Commons  rebellion since the formation of the coalition, there was speculation that planned reform of EU powers could become a lightning conductor for right-wingers worried that the Tories are conceding too much to the Lib Dems.

An attempt by Mr Cameron to placate Eurosceptics with a promise of a national poll on any significant transfer of powers to Brussels backfired when critics claimed it would weaken British sovereignty.
