Murphy pledges armed forces priorities

Military service personnel and veterans would be given guaranteed priorities in areas such as healthcare and housing under any future Labour government, Shadow Defence Secretary Jim Murphy promised.

He said party MPs would try to force through an amendment to the Armed Forces Bill going through the Commons this week to create a legally-binding covenant.

Mr Murphy accused David Cameron of breaking a pledge made last June during a photo opportunity on the Ark Royal.

Ministers say the Armed Forces Bill’s proposed annual report enshrines the covenant in law. The exchanges came in the same week the Ministry of Defence sacked active service personnel by email.
