John Biggs, Labour’s budget spokesman in the Assembly, said: “Boris Johnson not putting up his share of the council tax this year will save the average Londoner pennies. But the government is taking away £200 from every household – on top of the mayor’s record Tube and bus fare rises which hit everyone. He’s giving a little with one hand and snatching away all he can carry with the other.”
Cuts by the Conservative-led coalition mean the capital will be more than half a billion pounds worse off under the Tories
and Liberal Democrats – that’s £200 per household.
The Tory Mayor’s budget will mean the loss of 1,000 police officers on the beat and 890 community support officers as well as jobs, skills and economic funding slashed by 50 per cent. Mr Johnson has also cut £28 million to help disabled people by making Underground stations step-free.
Mr Biggs said: “Rather than showing the leadership London needs and standing up for the city against the Government’s unfair cuts, Boris Johnson has championed them.”
