Labour won 30 of the 60 seats in the Welsh Assembly – one short of an outright majority – with the Conservatives winning 14, Plaid Cymru 11 and the Liberal Democrats 5.

Mr Jones, speaking in the Senedd, said he would form a Labour government “without any triumphalism and with no trace of any political tribalism.” He added: “We want to work with the other parties where we can.”

Labour gained four seats, including Llanelli, where Keith Davies ousted Plaid Cymru deputy leader Helen Mary Jones; Cardiff North, where Julie Morgan, wife of former First Minister Rhodri, captured the seat from the Conservatives; Cardiff Central, where Jenny Rathbone beat the Liberal Democrats; and Blaenau Gwent, where Alun Davies took the seat after Trish Law, the independent socialist who succeeded her late husband Peter, stood down.
