Sanctions now against brutal Bahraini tyranny

Peter Tatchell says the international community must withdraw support from the Bahraini regime

The international community has failed in its duty to protect the civilian population of Bahrain. It has sat back and done nothing to rein in the regime of King Hamad ibn Isa Al Khalifa. He stands accused of terrorising his own people, resorting to mass arrest, detention without trial, torture and murder.

If the duty to protect civilians applies in Libya, why not in Bahrain?

In defence of the human rights of the Bahraini people, the United Nations, European Union, United States, United Kingdom and Arab League should work together to impose targeted sanctions: halt all arms sales to Bahrain, cease military co-operation, suspend the operation of the US naval base, institute a travel ban and assets-freeze on top regime officials and prohibit the export to Bahrain of luxury items for the rich ruling elite.

They should also refer Bahrain’s leaders to the International Criminal Court and the UN Human Rights Council on charges of torture and crimes against humanity, and report Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates to the UN Security Council for their interference in the internal affairs of Bahrain and the role of their troops in the violent suppression of the democracy protests.

The protesters in Bahrain are demanding democracy and human rights, especially for the Shia Muslim majority who comprises more than 60 per cent of the population. Shias are excluded from political power by the pro-Sunni monarchy and government. They suffer sustained discrimination, especially in housing and jobs.

Human rights activists in Bahrain report that at least 30 civilians have been killed, including four people who have died in custody after beatings and torture. Around 400 democracy protesters have been injured. Doctors and nurses who treated the wounded and spoke publicly about their injuries have been arrested, beaten and tortured. Forty-seven of them are being put on trial.

Already four protesters have been sentenced to death, following military trials held behind closed doors.

Close to 1,000 Bahrainis have been arrested since the start of protests in February, although about 300 of these have since been released. Twenty-one opposition activists and human rights defenders are being prosecuted on trumped up charges.

An estimated 1,000 professionals have been sacked from their jobs, accused of pro-democracy and pro-Shia sympathies. The country’s only opposition newspaper has been closed down. The editors of Al-Wasat are being put on trial on bogus charges of misreporting the protests and the government’s crackdown. Twenty-seven Shia mosques, meeting houses and shrines have been destroyed or damaged.

A total of 1,500 Saudi and UAE soldiers entered Bahrain in March and are helping with this systematic brutality. This is unacceptable repressive interference in the internal affairs of Bahrain. The international community must demand their immediate withdrawal.

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navi Pillay, has condemned the savage tactics of the Bahraini regime as “shocking and illegal conduct”. But the people of Bahrain need more than words of condemnation. They need concerted international action against the criminal, western-backed tyranny of Al Khalifa, and his Saudi and UAE allies.

Bahrain bans opposition seminar on crackdown(AFP) – 2 hours agoDUBAI — Bahrain’s main Shiite opposition group said on Wednesday that it had been banned from going ahead with a planned presentation detailing abuses committed during a government crackdown on Shiite-led protests earlier this year.”Authorities have banned a presentation on ‘the atrocities of human rights violations since February 14′,” the Islamic National Accord Association (Al-Wefaq) said.Hadi al-Moussawi, one of 18 Al-Wefaq MPs who resigned from parliament in protest at the March crackdown, told AFP that a security official had called the movement warning that the event was “illegal because authorities were not informed.”Moussawi said the warning was strange as the group had never had to inform authorities of seminars held inside its premises in the past.

Yesterday, the martial court sentenced a 21 year old, Monem Mansoor, to 3 years impressment. The crime: he was photographed carrying his friend who was received a direct shot into his head by the police. The killer was probably awarded. Mr. Tatchell, please accept Ahmed’s invitation to come to Bahrain. You will see more examples of the regime justice which you can report to the world. ( of course, this is hypothetical since you will never be granted an entry visa).

Thank you Mr. Tatchell for your tireless work on behalf of justice and human rights for all. We in Bahrain have been largely ignored by the west when it comes to sanctions and punishment of the regime for it’s atrocities against armless and defenseless people. It is sad that there are different standards to deal with different countries, when the only standard should be to uphold the people’s right in freedom, dignity and universal human rights. We hope this will change soon and the world will hold the alkhalifa responsible for all their crimes.

The person with a head shot (which was operated on after death by one of the doctors to exaggerate his wound (the doctor is awaiting his trial along with other criminal medical staff) his name is Ahmad Farhan, he  killed Ahmad Almaresi (a policeman), probably Monem Mansoor is an accomplice but i’m not sure so I will ask

All above mentioned is fault and never true, it is really astonishing how you are not honest in your reports, Bahrain is facing a brutal agenda from Iran and Hezbolla and you are talking rabbish have you ever seen those people who you called thdem protesters they are killing the expats and bringing horror to them and meantime stopping people to go to thier works and blocked the roads and brought the innocent children in the thier gatherings  !!!  Why are you are easily cheated by these people who call themselves proterstors ?  Do thier leaders are not member in the parliamant ? why they are not asking thier demands in the parliamant ?  Are you blind to see who are supporting them ? It is a pitty to see from only ONE EYE !! Are the other side of the people not nation of Bahrain ? We are 350,000 to 400,000 inhabitant support our king and why you cant see us ?  Is this the democracy you say  ??

It is the task of any news papper or web or any announcer to edit the true and fact news but unfortunately in your case it is all in countrary and I am astonished how you are supporting a group called opositions where in fact they are acting hezbolla and Iran, cant you see why Iran and Hezbolla and Mqtadha Sadr supporting the oppositions in Bahrain ? You did nt see how they killed the expats and how they occupied a hospital and stoped all people to be treated there except thier own group ? Do you agree to such brutal movements of those groups who called themselves protesters ? What about the other side of society who support King and also the government ?  Why you ignore them ? It is not true that all Bahrainis are oppositions and also do not compare Bahrain with other Arab countries like Tnis and Lybia, here we have a house of parliamant with 18 members from oppositions out 40 ? Why they do brutal things at the time they have members in the parliaman ? Please do no judge one sided.? What is your agenda ? Do you have same agenda which done in Iraq ? Do you have in mind to give the country to pro-hezbola or pro Iran ?  Do you want to make about 400,000 of the other side of the society as Refugees ? The same done to Iraq and just for your agenda ?    Can you reply honoustly  ?  Why you were supporting our government in the past and now you are changing your policy ?  Any agreement with Mullas in Iran ?

    Dear Mr. Author,
How it is astonishing that you call yourselfe human rights campaigner and you publish all Lies:
Who told you 30 people killed  ? How you just publish the untrue news from one sided ?
The numbers who been killed are less than 20 so what about the Policemen who were killed by the people you call them protestors , you never heared or seen how they are killing policemen by overdriving the cars on thier bodies after purposaly accident ?
Have you ever seen the poor man from Bangladesh whom the protestors attacked his house and cutted his tongue ?
Have you ever seen the Taxi Driver of 75 years old being attacked by the protestors and being killed ?
Have you ever seen the video of the Asian Men brought to Salmaniya and they are chained by the protestors and kept in the  aumblance and brought to Salmaniya Hospital as hostages ?  Did you see them occupies a general hospital for thier own usage only and choising whom to treat and whom to refuse ?
Have you seen them blocked the roads and not allowing people to attend thier jobs ?
I am afraid you are a one EYED and one EAR person ?
My dear it is your responsilbity to publish the TRUTH and not one sided news , it seems you never watch the TV s whatt is going on in Syria and Lybia and Iran and how the human being wrights are lost  !!
May be because Syria is not having OIL and your people agenda is to neglect countries NOT having oil and here your eyes is on Bahrain cause very close to the OIL Fields of Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia ?  This is your Agenda and now it is very clear.  Forgive me to be so frankly to you .  HONESTY IS THE BEST POLICY MASTER !! MAY YOU DID NOT READ THIS.

Anti-Saudi sentiment is rising in Bahrain, where people are calling for an end to more than two centuries of Al Khalifa royal family’s rule in the Persian Gulf state. Erasing of mosques is bad? It’s despicable and sick act by people who claim to be Muslim. The Saudi regime is playing the sectarian card and simple minded people will get carried away
This shows the anti-SPIRITUAL MATERIALISTIC nature of the Anglo-American cult of SUNNI-Wahhabism. These think that if you destroy physical symbols the ideas “go away”. The same is the perverse idea behind Wahhabi suicide bombers [[]killing Muslims and civilians]. It’s this type of moronic “problem solving” West loves to see in its subjects. So West can despise them even more.
Arab regimes are the thugs for the arrogant entities, led by America and Zionism, to intimidate and oppress their Populations for the benefit of their masters to steal and loot their nation’s wealth and to stay on their thrones. This game has been played in the open and has become a common practice, even the Western Populations are becoming aware of this crime of which their governments has taken on board for some time now as policy and in practice, they are getting too disparate and couldn’t be hidden anymore. But all will come to an end very soon, God willing.

    Dear Peter,
With my full respects to you still you are inisting to publish the UNTRUE news only from those who call themselves oppostions and you never publish the idea or the truth from Government, it is your task to publish both sides presentation and not only one side which always comes in thier own benefits.
You are talking about Alkhalifa Rollers who are here more than 200 years, yes still we need them to be here for more than 200 years if the replacement is the Islamic Republic copied from Islamic Republic of Iran.  We never accept a religious regim even on our bodies, my question to you is why you are supporting such regime to come to Bahrain ?  Is your country rolled by a religious regime ?  Are you sure all the Bahraini Nations want such regime to roll them ?  We have a constitution elected by all the people and amonst them is Alwefaq with 18 members and the election was so clean that even those of oppositions entered the Parliament and even those with Iranian Siate.  Do you believe such clean election can be held in Islamic Regime of Iran or even in Bahrain ?  The Islamic Leaders are a dectatorice personal ideas like it is in Iran and you have no right to say yes or no . My question to you as a human being supporter is such regime in your mind for us ?  we are combining 50% of the Sunny population and never agree that such Old or Antient Time Rolls will roll us the same happening in Iran and called Welayat Al Faqi  !! We reject it and you as a human right supporter MUST not accept such bloody roll. Please adjust your records and do not call Bahrain Kingdom as brutal regime since our rollers are never so.  All those news coming to you from one side party is untrue and we never accept it cause our policy is not to publish LAYs.  My question to you do you in Great Britain reward those people who act against the law ?  Why the last demonstration in London was stopped by the Police ? Is the Police allowing them to ruin and blaock the roads and bring horror to the people, then if they did so would not be questioned by Police ?  Do you bring in Britain the School Children to demonstrations and load them in open trucks ? May be you have no idea or those pictures are banned to you  !!
