Alison McGovern, Labour MP for Wirral South, John Smith, president of the Federation of Entertainment Unions, and the actress Maggie Steed all condemned the cuts at a rally of activists and lobby of Parliament on June 15 to launch the Lost Arts campaign.

Paul Noon, general secretary of Prospect, which represents staff at the British Museum, British Library, English Heritage and National Galleries of Scotland, said: “Thousands of people with unique skills are set to lose their jobs in museums, galleries, national libraries and heritage organisations. This joint campaign aims to highlight the terrible damage these cuts will cause, and persuade the Government to change direction.”

John Smith said: “Every £1 invested in the arts produces £2 for the economy, yet the sector is currently suffering from disastrous cuts.”
