This is the first edition of Tribune to be published since it was decided to move to a co-operative ownership model

by Tribune Editorial
Tuesday, November 8th, 2011

The title is under new ownership and work has begun on the formal and legal setting up of the co-operative structures. The change is one that moves Tribune into a more fitting management model, one which will enable a different form of funding from its past with more, democratic, reader involvement.

The process of setting up the new structure is likely to take several weeks. Final details are being worked out in conjunction with Tribune’s advisors at Principle Six, which specialises in the formation of co-ops. To bridge the start up gap until the new structure is in place, we are appealing for help with short-term funding (cheques payable to Tribune at 218 Green Lanes, London N4 2HB). Donations will be registered as a formal interest and stake in the new co-op.

We would like to thank readers and supporters who have already responded to our appeal. Our gratitude is as great as the warmth of your generosity. We are pledged to make your support work to ensure the long-term survival, development and growth of Tribune in its new co-operative home.

It is essential that we maintain continuity of publication, so we do not intend to take a break while work on the new management model progresses. In particular, we will be producing a special edition to mark the November 30 protest against the cuts, for which we are now

taking advertisement bookings (email gemma.pritchard@tribunemagazine.

co.uk, telephone: 07505 393719 or 07775 337 001).

However, in order to make the most effective use of funds and to allow time for work on the changes to ensure the speediest transition, Tribune will from this week be published fortnightly instead of weekly. That means the next edition, which will have more pages and content than the weekly version, will be published on November 25.

This is intended as a short-term measure until the New Year when the first edition, in the first month of Tribune’s 75th anniversary year, will be published on January 13. Current subscribers will have their account adjusted to an appropriate number of “free” copies by an extension to their subscription. Regular updates will appear on the Tribune website

(www.tribunemagazine.co.uk) which will also carry more running news and current event items.

More than anything, to make this exciting new step a success for Tribune, we need new subscriptions. It needs to reach potential readers, new or renewed, and tell them of the relevance of Tribune. It continues to provide a vital alternative to the dominant right-wing media in Britain and the conservative orthodoxies of its politicians. So, spread the word, sign up a subscriber, young activist or veteran campaigner, trade unionist, political party members, students or anybody with an interest in an alternative to the morally and socially dysfunctional society we have today.

The only place you can read all of Tribune's articles as soon as they are published is in the magazine. To find out more about subscribing from as little as £19, click here.
